What’s it like to work at Carterwood?
Whether you’re fresh out of university or have several years’ experience, making the decision to apply for a job is a big one. To help you understand what it’s like to work at Carterwood, we’ve spoken to three employees who each have a unique story to share.
Today, we’re sharing our interview with associate director, Matthew Drysdale:
- Why did you choose to apply for a job with Carterwood?
I saw a captivating job advert for a very interesting company that looked like they wanted to do things differently to traditional chartered surveying practices.
- You joined Carterwood in 2013, what have you achieved during this time?
Since joining Carterwood as a graduate surveyor, I have qualified as a chartered surveyor, moved from a report writing role to that of an agent, and received successive annual promotions. Most recently, I was promoted to associate director.
- How would you describe the office environment?
Fast, friendly and supportive.
- And what’s the team like to work with?
It’s the best thing about the company. Despite the fact that everyone is incredibly talented and ambitious in their own right, we all work together to achieve the best results.
- What’s surprised you the most?
How hands-on and accessible the directors and senior team are – this results in an unparalleled level of mentorship, which has in turn meant my career and that of my colleagues has flourished.
- What’s been your most valuable lesson so far?
You need to have passion for what you do. While I was a decent report writer, my real passion was for engaging with other people. Carterwood spotted that and moved me into a client-facing role.
- What do you love about what you do?
Human interaction with clients and colleagues… And obviously completing deals!
- Has your experience at Carterwood changed your career plans/aspirations?
I have always been an incredibly ambitious person with high aspirations. Carterwood have helped polish my abilities to match my ambition and meet these aspirations.
- What’s the social life at Carterwood like?
While we do work hard we appreciate having fun is just as important. As well as regular after work drinks and other events to mark special milestones, such as meeting targets and promotions, the company treats us to two annual events – the Christmas and summer socials. Last summer, for example, we got together for a fun afternoon at a local pub in Bristol, a boules tournament followed by a BBQ and drinks. We were all given a party bag stuffed with a thank you card and treats, including cinema vouchers, fun games and sweets. As you can imagine, we had a fabulous time and the teams in first, second and third place even received prizes!
- What tip would you give to anyone looking to apply for a job or placement at Carterwood?
Be aware that we work at a fast pace. Do your research into what we do. Ask yourself a couple of questions: Do you enjoy working as part of a team? Do you enjoy actively contributing to meetings and discussions? Do you enjoy working at a fast pace? Do you strive to get the answer right, as opposed to telling people what they want to hear? If you answer yes to most, you are likely to enjoy a very successful and rewarding career at Carterwood. Did I mention we work at a fast pace?
